My Story to Alignment - From Desperation to Ease

In the beginning, there was hustle.

I was DESPERATE and I mean absolutely desperate to have my own business, be my own boss and not have to be in an office where people liked me but kept their distance as they thought I was weird.

Before I even started, I came up with 1 unique business idea each month; but none seemed viable for me to make enough money from within the next 2 years so that I could quit my day job.

a brief stint in Affiliate Marketing

I went through waves of melancholy 5 years ago because I felt like I had no product or service to sell. Until I got caught up in affiliate marketing. Now before we go any further, I want to stress that the affiliate marketing industry is similar to the network marketing industry in that you can work for a really ethical company who treats you well, or you can work with team leaders who tell you to hustle and try the passive aggressive strategies to sell sell sell.

I know what you’re thinking, I had a bad experience with a bad and unethical company. Wrong. I found a really GOOD affiliate marketing company that supplied very good social media and online marketing trainings to digital nomads. I loved the product and was keen to sell it.

I spent 3 months researching the company and it’s top marketers. I scoured every inch of their website and legal policies, looking for something that was wrong. I talked to others who were doing the same.

Then I bit the bullet, I spent the £3000 on my credit card.

Keeping My Head Above Water

12 months later, following the hardest months for me to keep a 40 hour a week job AND the side hustle at the same time, there I was with £5000 in debt (I had spent £2000 on Facebook ads too) and hating every minute of it.

Looking back on it now, the reason why it took me so long to decide whether to go for it or not was because it was wrong for me. I have intuitive authority, so I make decisions in the moment, so this was ALL wrong for me.

I kept financially stable by keeping my day job, which was draining me more and more each week and my desire to be my own boss was drifting further and further away from me.

The Saviour

However, the most amazing and beautiful thing to come out of the affiliate marketing hustle was a very important person in my life. Jen was a fellow hustler who found she hated affiliate marketing just as much as I did, and after she quit at around the same time as me, she spent 18 months in therapeutic healing and coaching sessions.

But during that time, she found Human Design. And she invited me to find out what type I was.

The Realisation

Over the next few months of learning that I was a Projector (Advisor), I couldn’t believe what I had been doing all my life and how out of alignment I was. During this time, I had set up a coaching business teaching other coaches how to use Instagram to connect with new clients. Whilst I loved the business and my niche, it wasn’t going very well so I was having weekly trips to bitter-town and suffering from imposter syndrome when I saw other coaches having £10k months.

I made £3500 in my first year of business… and I was doing everything the Generator (Builder) way. Following Generator business and marketing strategies to a T!

Jen and I talked about how EVERYTHING, literally everything in the affiliate marketing business was wrong for our energy types. We weren’t meant to go go go, do do do, sell sell sell. Not in the way we were taught, anyway.

The Projector/Advisor Way

Leaning back and surrendering is the hardest part for a Projector, my type in Human Design, to wrap their mind around. Leaving the masculine world of hustle, long hours, pushy sales and de-humanising people was hard for me. I’d spent 13 years in corporate marketing and NOTHING I had done was humanising or emotionally driven at all.

My biggest realisation came when I took myself off social media for a week and went on holiday. I came back to a number of freebie sign ups and 2 requests to work with me. They said they recognised and invited me for what I could help them with and I had a wonderful time working with them.

Yes that’s right, the way that Projectors get clients is to shine their light, then rest and invitations will appear. So the concept of being on social media several times a day because “the more you show up, the more clients you get” wasn’t right for me. CLOSING Instagram down is the way I get clients. Weird, huh?

The Rest Is History

And, as they say, the rest is history. My life has turned 180 since then, and I’m still growing. I get horizontal (the Projector way of plugging yourself back in to recharge your energy) every single day and work 3 to 4 hours. Although sometimes it’s a fine line between work and play because I love marketing!
